A timeline of 20 milestones

1985-7 - 1985-7
Allotment in Nottingham where I created my first growing sculptures.

1986 - 1986
MA exhibition at Trent Polytechnic, Nottingham.

1993 - 1993
Married Pauline Burbidge. We had a joint exhibition ‘Joining Forces’ at Angel Row gallery, Nottingham.

1994 - 1994
Started our 4-day annual Open Studio at Allanbank Mill Steading in August. It has continued ever since.

1995 - 1995
Began a garden at Allanbank which continues to develop.

1996 - 1996
Grizedale residency.

1997 - 1997
Killhope Lead Mining Museum residency.

1998 - 1998
‘Pb’ – exhibition of my sculpture and drawing, Gallery in the Forest, Grizedale.

2002 - 2002
Hush House, a sculpture commission in Chester.

2004 - 2004
‘Point of Resolution’, made from growing heather on the Southern Upland Way in the Scottish Borders.

2008 - 2008
Spottiswoode. Making growing sculpture in a private wood in the Lammermuirs. There are several ongoing projects.

2009 - 2009
Masseria della Zingara, Puglia, Italy. A growing sculpture begun with Olive trees – ongoing.

2011 - 2011
‘Growing’ touring exhibition, Gracefield and four other venues. This included two growing sculptures as legacy projects. One in daffodils ‘HOST’ at Gracefield Art Centre, Dumfries, and one in snowdrops ‘Black is White’ in Hawick.

2016 - 2016
‘Gridulations’ solo exhibition of my drawing, Joan Hughson Gallery. A continuing partnership.

2017-18 - 2017-18
‘Songs for Winter’ joint exhibition with Pauline Burbidge, City Art Centre, Edinburgh.

2018 - 2018
Marchmont House. An ongoing vital partnership with Hugo Burge, director of Marchmont House, who
I met in 2018. We have begun three growing sculptures already, ‘Skyboat’, ‘Pearbeam’ and ‘Chestnutring’
with more planned. -
2019 - 2019
‘Gridations’ solo exhibition of my drawing at Djanogly Gallery, Nottingham University.

2019 - 2019
Solo exhibition of my drawing at Messums, Wiltshire. This year an exhibition of my work will be held at Messums London, September/October 2023 – see Exhibitions & Events page for details.

2020 - 2020
‘Dancing Tree’ installed at Marchmont House.
