Living Bridges at Marchmont House

Two footbridges are being grown from 4 Alders. A tree is planted on either side of the stream/burn and bent over an arched steel frame and tied down. The growing tip of the tree when it reaches the other side will be encouraged to take root making a strong junction on the other side. Eventually the two trees growing side by side will be big enough to fuse forming a narrow bridge. Vertical branches from the trees will be trained to form a living handrail. Steel frames made by James Knowles.
